With Earth Day just around the corner (April 22), a lot of us are thinking about the small actions we can take that add up to something bigger. If you're a cyclist, you're probably already making a pretty eco-friendly choice every time you ride. But what about the gear you use to take care of your bike?
At VELOSOCK, we've been asking ourselves the same question. Since launching the first-ever indoor bike cover, we’ve been focused not just on keeping bikes clean and protected — but on how we can create something that also takes care of the planet.
This article is a closer look at the impact of a bike cover, and how choosing the right one can help reduce waste, avoid overproduction, and extend the life of your gear. It’s a reminder that even small habits — like covering your bike — can play a role in protecting the environment.

Most cyclists already know they’re doing something good every time they hop on their bike. Whether it’s riding to work instead of driving, or spending weekends on long-distance routes, cycling is one of the cleanest ways to get around. And many cyclists care deeply about nature — it’s part of the joy of riding.
But sometimes the gear that supports cycling doesn’t follow the same eco-friendly mindset. Accessories like bike covers, for example, are often mass-produced in large batches, with little thought given to material waste or overproduction. They’re made to be cheap and replaced often — which means more waste in the long run.
That’s something we wanted to change.
Like most products made from fabric, bike covers create leftover scraps during production. In many cases, those leftover pieces are tossed out and never used again.
Instead of letting that happen, we looked for ways to reuse them. A lot of those offcuts — the small shapes that don’t quite fit into a full cover — can be turned into other useful things for cyclists. We've started turning these pieces into small accessories like pedal covers and compact storage pouches.
It’s not a huge shift, but it’s a meaningful one. By giving leftover fabric a second life, we reduce the amount of waste our factory produces — and cyclists get extra value from materials that would have otherwise been discarded.
To avoid overproduction and reduce waste, we now use a Print-On-Demand approach for VELOSOCK covers. That means we only produce a cover once an order has been placed.
This small shift makes a big difference. Instead of printing large batches and storing excess stock, we’re creating exactly what’s needed, when it’s needed. It helps reduce material waste, saves on storage space, and allows us to offer a wide variety of designs without unnecessary overstock.
It also means less pressure to discount or throw away unsold products — a win for both sustainability and thoughtful production.
A big part of sustainability isn’t just about how something is made — it’s also about how long it lasts.
When bike covers are made quickly and cheaply, they often don’t hold up well. The material stretches out. The seams give way. The zipper breaks after a few uses. And when that happens, people end up tossing them and buying another one — and the cycle repeats.
From day one, VELOSOCK covers have been designed to last. We chose thick, high-quality fabric that’s stretchable but durable. We added strong stitching and reliable zippers. And we tested our designs on real bikes used by real cyclists.
The result? Covers that can handle regular use, whether you’re keeping your bike indoors, transporting it in your car, or carrying it through a muddy trailhead. They don’t tear easily. They don’t wear out fast. And most importantly — they don’t need to be replaced every year.
It might not sound revolutionary, but when people keep using the same product season after season, that’s a real win for sustainability.
Sometimes, sustainability shows up in the smaller details.
Take storage, for example. VELOSOCK covers help keep your bike — and your space — clean. When you use a full cover, your bike doesn’t track mud or grime into your hallway, hotel room, or car trunk. That means fewer cleanups, fewer paper towels used, and even less water and detergent down the drain. It’s not the biggest change in the world, but it all adds up.
Covers also help protect your bike’s components. A cleaner bike tends to last longer, which means fewer repairs, fewer replacement parts, and less waste overall. And when you’re transporting your bike, a full cover also protects the interior of your car — helping reduce damage and extra cleaning there too.
These kinds of small benefits might be easy to overlook, but together they create a cleaner, more low-impact way to live and ride.
We don’t pretend to be perfect. There’s always more to learn, more to improve, and more ways to reduce our impact. But we’re committed to the process.
So far, we’ve been able to cut back on waste, avoid overproduction, and improve product lifespan. These steps might not be flashy, but they matter to us — and to many of the cyclists who support what we do.
And we’re still pushing forward. As we grow, we’re exploring new ways to reduce energy usage during production, rethink how we handle packaging (in ways that still protect your product), and keep finding creative uses for every bit of leftover material.
It’s a work in progress, but one we believe in.
If you’re reading this, chances are you care about the gear you choose. You want products that not only look great and work well, but also reflect your values.
We created VELOSOCK for cyclists like you. People who think ahead. People who appreciate good design, but also want to support companies that think beyond the bottom line.
So when you choose a VELOSOCK full cover, you’re not just keeping your bike clean. You’re supporting a small business that’s actively trying to reduce waste, avoid overproduction, and create longer-lasting products.
It’s a small decision that supports a bigger idea: that better design and better habits can help make a difference.
We started VELOSOCK with a simple goal: to make it easier to store and transport bikes without mess or hassle. But along the way, we realized that every product we create is also a chance to do something more thoughtful. Every choice we make — from the materials we use to the way we print — is an opportunity to do better.
So we’ll keep asking questions. We’ll keep looking for smarter ways to design and build. And we’ll keep listening to the cycling community that made all this possible.
